Keep Calm And Do Some Revision

The 9th of January marked the start of exams. The hall has been very quiet this week, with many people tucked away in their rooms or at the library revising. But Welfare has come together to try and keep everyone calm in exam season. The union have had free stalls giving out, revision planners, drinks and fruit. There have also been dog petting and walking sessions and relaxing activities. Plans are also in progress for a few activities to keep Rig-Rut calm.

Good luck everybody!

Action Food Drive

This December the Loughborough Students’ Union Action team announced their annual competition of a food drive between the halls. Carly and I wanted Rigg-Rut Action to make an impact with how many donations we could get, despite our small size. We went round every single flat and door knocked on people’s rooms until our trolley was full. Not only did we collect non-perishable food items, but also old clothes, spare change and pet food as well! In addition to the donations, we had to make a creative submission as part of our entry. So this year we decided to film a Christmassy video based on the mannequin challenge and the Mean Girls’ jingle bell rock dance routine – which just so happens to also show off our treasurer Liam’s and social sec Jez’s incredible dance skills.

Winter Ball 2016

Winter ball is highly regarded as one of the best events in the Rigg-Rut calendar year, and Winter Ball 2016 didn’t disappoint.

The City Rooms in Leicester had the privilege this year to host 160 of Rigg-Rut’s sharpest dressed students. After a drink on arrival and one or two hundred photos, people made their way to the main room for an exquisite Christmas dinner. This delightful meal was shortly followed by a Taking of the Wine, which was certain to get the drinks flowing and didn’t fail to raise a few eyebrows and leave some questions needing to be asked later on. As the night got into full swing, the high heels came off and the dance floor filled as everyone relaxed and the DJ finally got to play his part.

One final hall photo in the venue and it was off to Firefly for a usual messy Monday night.

New Committee High Table

The recent December high table welcoming new committee was also important for another reason. We welcomed many alumni to this evening of food and drink. This included former hall chairs social secretaries, and even the Chairman of Derby cricket club! This was as well as the usual favourites (George Hones, Jack Needham and 'Welshy')

November Hustings 2016

Overall, November hustings was an absolute success, with the most candidates we have seen in years. There’s no doubt this was down to the series of Apprentice-style promotional videos we did running up to hustings. They were really high quality and made a real difference. The night itself, with over 20 candidates videos and speeches to play on the big screen, ran really smoothly. The room was totally packed, as we managed to promote the night really well on social media.

Victory for RR Rugby Boys

2016 was the first year that Rigg-Rut saw its Mens’ rugby team reach the top pool of the IMS tournament. Buoyed by the introduction of team coaches Tom MacQuish and Alex Roberts, the new team found their way to the top of pool B. A convincing 38-0 victory against Cayley along with a 48-12 win over Rutherford saw Rigg-Rut make history.  Led by captain Scott Renfree Tuck and with several squad members pushing for a spot in the rugby All-star team, the future looks bright for our ambitious rugby side.
